It also prevents any 3rd parties such as your employer, your parents, or your spouse from monitoring your browsing history. What websites work with WebProxy?Almost all websites work with WebProxy. The only sites that will fail are those that heavily depend on client side scripting systems such as Javascript. You can choose to enable or disable script support in your preferences, but you should be aware of the risks of allowing scripts to operate through WebProxy. See What are the risks of allowing scripts? below for more information. How does WebProxy protect my privacy?WebProxy protects your privacy by hiding your identity from the sites you browse. Whenever you browse via WebProxy, the rest of the internet only sees a connection from WebProxy. They cannot know what computer the connection originally from. Also, all cookies that Internet sites would store on your computer are stored for you by WebProxy instead. How does WebProxy protect my computer from viruses and spyware?WebProxy blocks downloads of executable files such as viruses and spyware. This makes your browsing experience safer. Do I need any special software to use WebProxy?WebProxy works with the browser you're already using, on Windows, Macintosh, and Linux. WebProxy has been tested with Interent Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, and Safari. You don't need any special software to begin using WebProxy immediately. What browsing methods does WebProxy allow?Site http transfers, which is over 99.9% of the web. Due to their high data volumes and length of connection times, WebProxy cannot support things like streaming audio and video. Is browsing via WebProxy faster than ordinary browsing? In many cases, yes it is! This is because WebProxy blocks ads and other heavy content that take up most of the download time for major websites.. What ads does WebProxy block?WebProxy maintains a list of some of many of the more annoying and intrusive ad sites on the web, and we block ads from those places. Does WebProxy block any other content? No. The internet is supposed to be about freedom and empowering individuals. WebProxy wants to help with that. Are there any restrictions for non-subscribers?To keep our quality of service for our subscribers at the highest possible level, non-subscribers are blocked from using WebProxy during peak traffic periods. Do employers monitor employees' web browsing?YES! You should always expect that when you are at work, there is a log being made of every URL you visit. There are many products that corporations can easily install that do all of this automatically, and provide them with convenient reports of every employee's browsing activity. In most cases, employers don't have someone watching these reports every day, but they do receive alerts for high-volume surfers, and employers visiting sites with questionable content. They also may audit web browsing history to find supporting evidence in the event that there are any other complaints with an employee. In some locations, employers are accountable for the online activities of their staff, so they have even more reason to do so. Will my employer be able to monitor my browsing through WebProxy? No, not if you are using a secure connection (click the icon for "use https" at the top.) If your employer investigates carefully, they will be able to determine that you are browsing to WebProxy, but not where you are using WebProxy to browse to. Does WebProxy keep logs of my web browsing history? Not unless you specifically turn on the "keep history" option. Even so, history files are only kept for the life of your session, and are removed after your session ends. Subscribers may store permanent bookmarks if they like.. What are the risks of allowing scripts to run?Javascript and ActiveX are referred to as "client-side" languages. That means they run directly on YOUR computer -- not on WebProxy. For this reason, those scripts have access to information about your identity from your computer, and allowing those scripts to run could undermine your privacy. What does the "text only" browsing option do?The "text only" option blocks loading of images. Turning this option on makes it difficult for someone who glances at your screen from knowing what web site you are browsing to and improves surfing speeds by reducing bandwidth. What does the "bypass cache" option do?This option is available to subscribers only. If this option is turned on, WebProxy sends instructions to your browser that tell it not to store local copies of images and web pages in the browser's cache. Note: This will slow down your browsing experience dramatically, because much more data will need to be transferred to your computer as you browse. The benefit is that fewer local files are stored on your computer, making it more difficult for someone to learn something about your browsing, even if they have direct access to the computer you use. What are the benefits of subscribing to WebProxy? The most important benefit is that subscribers may use WebProxy during peak traffic periods. Subscribers may also download files of more types (such as mp3, wav, ogg, mpeg, and avi) than non-subscribers. Subscribers may keep bookmarks. Subscribers may use the "bypass cache" option. Subscribers may remove page titles from the sites they visit (to conceal what site they are browsing to). Additionally, subscribers will not see any advertisements from WebProxy. How much does a subscription to WebProxy cost?We charge $4.95 per month for complete access to WebProxy by WebProxy. We believe this is a very reasonable cost for a secure and private Internet browsing experience. |
